How to clean your ears

Wash only the part of the ear which can be seen.  Soap hands and wipe round the pinna and behind the ear with soapy finger

s taking care not to poke into the ear canal. Rinse hands and wipe round the area again with wet fingers and then dry gently with a soft towel.

RULES TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY EARS

  1. If you have problem ears keep them dry by using a large piece of cotton wool coated in petroleum jelly (to waterproof the cotton wool) and placing this into the concha
  2. Do not immerse your head under the bath water which will allow water to enter the ear canals. This water contains body bacteria by reason of just sitting in the water! This can lead to an ear infection.
  3. Do not attempt to clear the ear canals with any implement, as they have a self clearing mechanism.  The skin of the ear canal moves slowly from the centre of the ear drum outwards renewing the skin constantly (unless you have had surgery on your ear canals when this function may be interrupted). Wax is only formed at the entrance to the ear canal and is required to lubricate the skin of the ear canal. Ears with very little wax or wax that has been moved down the ear canal with implements can become very itchy and dry or infected by rubbing the skin. (See Ear Problems page)

Understanding your ears helps you to take personal responsibility for your ear health and prevent ear problems occurring
